Visual DataFlex developers are uniquely well placed to evolve their existing applications into interactive, user friendly Web applications including all the elements that we have come to expect in providing a good user interface including
  • Parent-child data entry such as invoice header/invoice lines
  • Multi-row grid based data entry
  • Well controlled look up lists
  • Multiple data entry elements in a single view
Just as it does for the now familiar Windows development process, Visual DataFlex will do a lot for you for the web page environment of "any time, anywhere" web applications straight out of the Development Studio. But just as for Windows application development, there is a lot more that you can do if you understand something of the underlying technology. The Web environment with its underpinnings of Javascript, XML and the DOM (Document Object Model) is very different to the Windows GUI.

This course provides an introduction to these basic concepts, before moving on to exactly what it is that the VDF AJAX Library offers you. More on this here, but very briefly:
  • Automatic access to data dictionary business logic processing
    • Validations
    • Updating processes
  • Controlled look up lists
  • Control of multiple Tab Pages
All of which means that you don’t have to re-write your core, proven business processing logic when creating web capable extensions of your existing applications.

What you do need to know is how this all holds together, how the VDF AJAX library works, and how it manages to do all this. This is what this training course will provide.

Why go Web?
Because, fundamentally, that is where the world (and your client base) is going. For very many reasons, ranging from the simplicity of installation and updating of web applications (no "fat client apps" to distribute and maintain), to the attractions of unlimited "any time, any place" access, the demand for web capable applications is growing very rapidly. We believe that it is no exaggeration to compare today, 2010, with the situation 20 years ago when Windows usurped character mode. With web application development, Data Access and Visual DataFlex are ahead of the game, providing state of the art opportunities to take your applications into a true Web based environment.

What about "internal" applications?
We see a similar push towards a "Web" basis even for these. This is partly because of the much reduced network bandwidth needs of Web mediated applications, but also the greatly reduced application installation, updating and general maintenance implied by the server based, easily scaleable Web application available to all who need it - or who you want to encourage to use it. While this can be achieved with Citrix or Terminal services management of windows applications, in the long term those solutions will be the equivalent of continuing character mode applications into the Windows world! And today, "internal" applications have a habit of migrating out to homeworkers, PDAs, "self service" public users etc. It is web application technology and web services that provides for this.

Take the opportunity
Familiarise yourself with the way application development is heading. Take this opportunity to get yourself up to speed with how you will be developing applications through the next ten years.

Newcomer to VDF?
Much of this training course is about non-VDF matters! If you are looking for a way into web application development, the VDF/AJAX combination is a very effective means, and the Javascript/XML/DOM aspects of the course are targeted at those who are unfamiliar with these. Provided that you have the VDF Personal Edition and AJAX library on your laptop, and have familiarised yourself with the VDF development Studio and the basic Windows and Web application development tutorials, this course will put you on the road to effective web application development. If you have any doubts - just call us!

Do you have a legacy DataFlex character mode application?
Use this training course to understand how to migrate into the "multi-user" Web application world. Find out how you can extend key elements of your legacy applications where availability of data, and of data entry facilities, to a wide audience can reap big benefits in terms of "self service" data entry or data visibility.
